Program Description

EVOLUTION IN THE GALAPAGOS, ECUADOR

Special Interest: Biology

Advisor: Dr. Ellen and Robert Dawley

This Study At Home/Abroad experience has two parts:
  • “at home” component: You take BIO-350 (Evolution in the Galápagos) during the spring semester of 2012. This will be a standard four-credit course (prerequisite: BIO-101), taught by Robert Dawley, and will fulfill the Capstone/W requirement and the Org/Pop requirement for the biology major. The course will examine theories of natural selection, sexual selection, speciation, and phylogeny reconstruction as revealed by current research on the organisms of the Galápagos. Readings will include works by Darwin, a standard evolution textbook, and lots of research papers.
  • The abroad component: once you successfully complete BIO-350, you then spend 12 days in the Galápagos Islands enrolled in BIO-392 (Field Studies in the Galápagos), taught by R. & E. Dawley, earning two additional credits.
    • • Timing: May 12 -27, 2012, between UN Commencement and Memorial Day.
      • Rising seniors are eligible! Although the 2 credits you earn after graduation will not count towards the 128 credits required for graduation, they will appear on your transcript after you return.
