Non-Ursinus Programs designed for U.S. Students

The options listed below represent study centers abroad. Most are small, admitting twenty to forty US students per term; others host as many as 150 US students per semester. These programs employ their own instructors, offer a general education or theme-based curriculum, and place students in local home stays or student accommodations. Inclusions and features vary from program to program. Students who participate in these programs are visiting students abroad. Grades do not transfer; one credit per week up to a maximum of 9 credits per summer or up to 16 credits per semester do.

American Junior Year Abroad (AJYA), Heidelberg University, Germany
Special interest: German language and culture, community practicum
Adviser: Dr. Robin Clouser (Modern Languages)
The University of Heidelberg hosts this program for the academic year, spring or shortened fall semester. Students must have two years of college-level German. All students take an intensive four-week course and participate in weekly tutorials, community activities and language exchange partnerships. Depending on the results of a proficiency exam, students are placed in courses at the International Study Center, the Institute for German as a Foreign Language, the Junior Year Student Center, or in other departments of the University. Internships are available to qualified students. Students are housed with German students in university or in private residence halls. Up to 16 credits.
 
American University Center in Provençe (AUCP), Aix-en-Provençe, France
Special interest: French language and culture, community practicum
Adviser: Dr. Frances Novack (Modern Languages)
This program runs for a semester or an entire academic year. Previous French study at the 251 level or higher is strongly recommended. The French Practicum course requires students to integrate themselves with French life by undertaking practical activities which place them in direct, natural contact with the local population. In addition to AUCP classes, qualifying students may study in the French Université de Provençe. All live with French families. Up to 16 credits.

BGSU Academic year in Salzburg, Austria
Special interest: German language and literature, art, history, business, education, political science, music
Adviser: Dr. Melissa Hardin (Center for International Programs)
In order to qualify for this academic year program, students must have completed a minimum of three semesters of college-level German. All coursework is done in German. In addition to the program courses and with the advice and approval of the director of the program, students may enroll in regular University of Salzburg courses. Students will live in one of the Austrian student residence hall located throughout the city. Up to 32 credits per year.

Brethren Colleges Abroad (BCA), Quito, Ecuador
Special interest: Spanish language, Latin American studies, humanities, social sciences, culinary arts.

In order to qualify for this semester o academic year program, students must have completed a minimum of two semesters of college-level Spanish. All coursework is done in Spanish. Internship are available to qualifying students. Students live with host families. Up to 16 credit hours.

Brethren Colleges Abroad (BCA), Strasbourg, France
Special interest: French language and culture, politics, and business
Adviser: Dr. Colette Trout (Modern Languages)
In order to qualify for this semester or academic year program, students must have taken French at the 201 level or higher. All coursework is done in French. This program is of particular interest to students wishing to study the European community and its political and economic implications. Internships are available to qualifying students. BCA programs give attention to issues of peace and justice. Students choose from several housing options. Up to 16 credit hours.
 
CAPA International Education Florence Program, Italy
Special interes: Art, art history, Italian language and culture
Adviser: Prof. Paula Álvarez Tamés (Center for International Programs)
This semester program with partner CAPA International Education includes the study of Italian language and culture, as well as courses taught in English by local instructors in studio art, art history, humanities and social sciences. All students take Italian language on site and live with home stay families. Prior language study is strongly recommended but not required. Visits to museums and archaeological sites are included in the program. Up to 16 credit hours.

CAPA International Education London Program (CLP), England
Special interest: British culture, internship option, service learning option
Adviser: Dr. Melissa Hardin (Center for International Programs)
This fall or spring program includes courses in British literature, theatre and media, European history and politics, psychology, art history, and business, as well as internships in local businesses and organizations. In addition, it features an academc service-learning option that places students in local community organizations. Students live with home stay families or in shared student flats. Up to 16 credit hours.

CAPA International Education Syndney Program 
Special Interest: Business, humanities, social science, education, English, psychology, internship option

This fall or spring program includes courses in art history, history, political science, business, anthropology, psychology, education, theater, media, and international relations as well as internship in local business and organizations. Students live in shared apartments or home stay families. Up to 16 credit hours.

SIT Study Abroad, Madagascar
Special Interest: Environmental studies, ecology, biology, French

This semester program with SIT Study Abroad will be conducted mainly in academic French. In order to qualify for this program students must have taken three recent semesters of college-level French or equivalent. Classroom and field-bases instruction in natural an social scientific methods encourage students to analyze environmental issues in an array of ecosystems. Numerous excursions to national parks, offer students a balanced social - and natural - science view and perspective on long-term conservation and the development needs of local populations. Students live with host families. Up to 16 credit hours.

Washington University in St. Louis Summer Study in Nice for Pre-Med, France
Special interest: French language and culture, pre-med
Adviser: Dr. Colette Trout (Modern Languages)
This intensive summer program is designed for students interested in French language, cultural studies as well as pre-medical studies. The program aims at total immersion in French language and culture, while providing students with the opportunity to experience first-hand the French medical system. France for the Pre-Med Student can accommodate students in a broad spectrum of health-related fields and special interests. 6 credit hours.
