Program Description

UC in Tübingen, Germany Semester

Special interest: German language and culture, education, internship option

The semester program is located in the beautiful medieval university town of Tübingen in southwestern Germany. The host institution, Sprachinstitut, follows the Council of Europe Common European Framework Reference in its language placement system and curriculum. No previous knowledge of German is required but all students register for an intensive German language course. Students of all majors have the opportunity to study European history, politics, and German and comparative literature. Courses are taught in English and in German. Independent research projects and internships, including science internships in university and private laboratories and teaching internships in German public schools, are available to qualifying students. The program includes visits to regional museums and historic sites. Students live with families. 16 credit hours.

Classes

  • All students are required to take at least one course in German language and “Germany as Text.” Intensive German language courses are also available.
  • Additional possible courses include World Literature IDS 102 (taught in English; fulfills the “G” or global studies requirement); German Cinema (offered for credit in both English and German); The German Fairy Tale (German 253); and Germany Today (German 315, an Internet-based course).
  • Internships for credit are available for qualified applicants in German public schools and in University genetics/microbiology labs and commercial chemistry labs.

Majors

The Ursinus in Germany program is open to all majors and requires no prior knowledge of the German language. It will be of special interest to students interested in German, international business, science, journalism, environmental studies, and teaching. Germany is a world powerhouse in alternative energy, and Porsche and Daimler-Benz are headquartered in nearby Stuttgart. The University is a center for medical, biology, and genetics research.

Group FLight

The College will arrange a group flight for all interested students so they can fly out and back together. The College will help students to obtain visas.

Family Homestays and academic center


Homestays: For purposes of language acquisition and integration in the local culture, all participants are placed in carefully selected family homestays in which they will enjoy home cooked meals and a private bedroom.
Academic center: The Language Institute in Tübingen is located in the modern south end of the city, convenient to university, the old city, shops and an international array of restaurants.  Two theaters nearby present a full program of plays.  

Pre-departure Orientation

Alll students who plan to study abroad for the fall 2010 semester must take IDS 210, a 1.0 credit pre-departure orientation course, during the last 7 weeks of the spring 2010 semester.  See the spring 2010 course schedule for sections, days and times.
